Brief History
Hunter Valley Grammar School was born from a conversation, a chance exchange between two Newcastle based men in 1987, and a belief that the Lower Hunter had an unmet educational need. The school grew out of the need to provide an independent, non-denominational and co-educational school for Hunter Families!
In the presence of the pioneering school community and curious bystanders, the Governor General, the Hon Bill Hayden AC, formally laid the foundation stone on 18 July 1989, before a newly built brick wall and freshly hung pair of gates; a hired rostrum; a piece of carpet; a microphone and an ancient Eucalypt bush land, out of which the new school was about to emerge.
Hunter Valley Grammar's dawning day was 31 January 1990 when the school opened its doors to a roll of around 110 pupils.
Hunter Valley Grammar School celebrates it 20th year in 2009. Today the school is widely regarded as one of the region's premier schools and aims to be one of the most outstanding independent schools in NSW and across Australia.
