It is no surprise that with a thirty two acre campus, the School boasts excellent sporting facilities and an extensive sporting program to match.
The School offers a wide variety of sports including aerobics, athletics, basketball, cricket, cross country, equestrian, football, netball, rowing, rugby union, rugby league, tennis, touch and swimming to name a few. Participation in sport is fundamental to the holistic education we provide to our students and paramount for healthy lifestyles and a lifelong positive view of sport and recreation. Students are encouraged to join in at all levels to develop physical and mental fitness, resilience, teamwork, leadership and the ability to set and achieve goals.
All students participate in weekly sport and recreational pursuits. Participation in representative sports and co-curricular clubs is encouraged, but not compulsory.

Talented sports students are encouraged to seek representative selection at the Hunter Region Independent Schools (HRIS), the Association of Independent Co-Ed Schools (AICES) and Combined Independent Schools (CIS) levels with ultimate selection in NSW All-Schools teams. HVGS students have achieved national honours and selection at the very highest level. We are proud of the fact that we are over represented at these levels for a school of our size.
HVGS sporting teams compete in local community competitions in basketball, netball, soccer, cricket and touch competitions. These clubs are designed to provide regular competition in a safe, organised and nurturing environment for students of all ability levels. Training for team sports is held within HVGS grounds after school, in most cases. HVGS would prefer students to play for a school team, but it is not compulsory.
