In 2019, significant steps have been taken by Rowing NSW to expand and enhance the representative opportunities for rowers and coxswains from regional areas.

To support this initiative, HVGS Rowing drove a campaign to reinstate the Central Districts Representative Team (which is eligible to represent our region at the NSW State Championships) and the implementation of the NSW Country Team.

These initiatives allow high performance and aspiring athletes from across Regional NSW an opportunity to challenge themselves and continue to access higher levels of representation in rowing.

For the first time, a NSW Country Crew has been added to the NSW Schools Pathway Team, which competes against every other state in the Interstate Pathway Race, an element of the broader Australian Underage Selection Regatta. This week-long Regatta is a series of trials under race conditions that allow National Selectors to put together the Australian Teams for the Junior World Championships, U21 Tran Tasman Team V New Zealand and U23 World Championships.

NSW will be represented by Schoolboy and Schoolgirl Crews, selected from among the best of metropolitan-based athletes, and for the first time, NSW Country Crews. Nominations and selections are managed by Rowing NSW, and selected athletes include participants from the North Coast Academy of Sport, HVGS & NGS.

We’re thrilled that seven HVGS rowers have been selected for the NSW Country Schoolboy Team and three athletes have been selected for the NSW Country Schoolgirl Team. Both teams will be coached by HVGS coaches.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our students to enjoy a unique experience in strong competition, ” said Director of Rowing, Tom Herborn.  “This will set the stage for future generations of regional athletes to be exposed to the highest level of competition and representative opportunity.”
