The formation of Hunter Valley Grammar School is a fascinating story, with more twists and turns than the Hunter River. Although a project that many people didn’t expect to get off the ground, a dedicated team poured their hearts and souls into making it a success. The HVGS story is one of leadership, taking risks, and independence required to pursue a dream. Most of all, it’s an acknowledgement that the finest human achievements are always collaborative.

A foundation stone was placed at the construction site in 1990. It’s still there today, visible in the brick entrance to the School. From that stone, HVGS rose from the bush – literally.

While a lot has changed over 34 years, Hunter Valley Grammar School still holds the same values and beliefs of our founders – to offer a school of excellence where all students can flourish. Our facilities and our programs may now be some of the best in the region but exceptional teaching and learning are still at the heart of what we do.

“We were all standing around in our best clothes for the official opening of the School. They must had placed the red carpet on an ants nest! Everyone was trying not to wiggle too much but the ants were going crazy.”
