- Year 7 is very popular with extremely strong enrolment demand. Have you considered joining us in Year 5? Starting in the Junior School at HVGS ensures your child’s formative and impressionable years will be defined in your school of choice. To guarantee your place, contact our Registrar.
- Prior to starting Year 7, you’ll be invited to an Information Evening. You can ask questions and meet the Principal and Head of Senior School, Head of Year 7 and Heads of House. They’ll share academic and wellbeing information and expectations pertinent to Year 7.
- Our transition program is second to none. Over a full week, new and continuing students experience life in the Senior School. They’ll meet their teachers and other students, and follow a Year 7 timetable. They’ll also meet key people who will form an integral role in their learning and wellbeing for the years to come.
- In Term 4 (prior to starting Year 7), we undertake academic testing so we know how best to support or extend your child in their learning. We’re not an academic selective school – so no pressure!
- Our families come from all corners of the Hunter and Newcastle region and beyond! About forty new students start their HVGS experience in Year 7.
- We run five streamed classes in Year 7.
- We offer a variety of scholarships for new and existing Year 7 students. Visit our Scholarships page for more information.

What Does an International Baccalaureate School Mean?
Our children are faced with an increasingly challenging world. For students to navigate a complex and ever-changing society, it’s important they see themselves as global citizens who are open-minded, thinking about the world around them, taking action for change and contributing to a more economical, peaceful and sustainable world.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme at HVGS uses school-wide pedagogy to better develop students’ skills necessary to navigate global citizenship.
